DEWEY AND RORTY ON DEMOCRACY AND EDUCATION

Miklos Nyiro In this paper I’ll try to compare, even to contrast in some important respects, but also to adjust to one another the views of John Dewey and Richard Rorty on two interrelated topics, namely, democracy and education. Since Rorty has often been criticized for a kind of betrayal of the heritage of Dewey’s radical liberalism, it is advisable, first, to investigate to some extent the specifics of the notion of democracy Rorty may have entertained. Therefore, I begin with a short attemp

PHILOSOPHY AND TEACHER EDUCATION

Philip L. Smith The Ohio State University “Is there a place for philosophy in the accreditation and certification ofeducational programs for teachers?” Yes, of course there is. Philosophy relates to educational programs for teachers in roughly the same way liberal education relates to the practical problems of life. And it is popular for the same reasons. Whether or not liberal education is popular is a function of what the word ‘practical’ means,

10 Misconceptions About Evolution

An evolutionary biologist clears up common myths By David P. Barash January 21, 2025 When Darwin published On the Origin of Species 166 years ago, there were, naturally, misunderstandings. In an 1860 review, Richard Owen, a leading Victorian scientist, rhetorically asked whether evolution by natural selection continuously operated through time. “Unquestionably not,” Owen wrote. Au contraire. The theory of evolution, masterfully crystallized by Darwin, shows how, over generations, populations

Will Standards and Accountability Enhance Educational Innovation?

Philip Smith The Ohio State University Summer 2010 Imagine that we lived in a nation of several hundred million people where there were huge variations of individual talents, attitudes, beliefs, and behavior. Imagine, too, that we professed to value these differences, not to merely tolerate them, but to actually encourage and celebrate them to a large and generous extent. Moreover, our reason for this stance was not simply because it showed a healthy respect for individuals, who might otherwi

Rationality and the Political Face of Education

Philip Smith The Ohio State University June 2007 From the time of the Greeks western culture has embodied a deep commitment to reason. Aristotle (384 B.C.-322 B.C.) believed that it puts us above the rest of nature’s creatures, not merely in a practical way, but in the way it has enriched our experience and culture. Georg Hegel (1770-1831) did him one better by proclaiming that we participate as mindful actors in reality as it unfolds before us. Philosophers of education have typically viewe

Dewey, Hook and Rorty on Pragmatism and Relativism

H.G. Callaway (Draft of January 20, 2024) (1,995ww +footnotes and References) Abstract Under the influence of the revival, or with prevalent acquiescence of the reviving pragmatic tradition, “corrosive” moral and epistemic skepticism have taken the form of doctrinaire relativism,(1) and this relativism, suggesting the futility of any set, common standards of judgment, has typically been conflated with pluralism. Hilary Putnam in particular has taken some considerable pains to distinguish th

What Can Nietzsche Teach Us About Education? A Philosophical Challenge Worth Considering

What Can Nietzsche Teach Us About Education? —A Hard Look In Both Directions— By Philip L. Smith The Ohio State University Presented at the American Philosophical Association Chicago, Illinois, February 2010 Academic philosophers in the United States have, for better or worse, generally ignored Nietzsche's work. His approach doesn't fit neatly into their analytic mode of inquiry, and they tend to view language as a tool existing apart from those who use it. Philosophers of education have had
