Floyd County Comes Alive with School, Music, Wellness and Community Events

August is bringing a fresh season of activity to Floyd County, Kentucky. With students returning to school, community programs continuing and local entertainment filling the calendar, residents have many opportunities to learn, participate and connect.
Floyd County Schools began welcoming students back for the 2026–27 school year on August 5. The beginning of a new school year is an exciting time for students, families, teachers and staff. As children adjust to new classrooms and routines, drivers throughout the county are reminded to slow down near schools, watch carefully for buses and remain alert at bus stops.
Community wellness also remains an important part of life in Floyd County. The Floyd County Public Library is offering free chair yoga on select Mondays, including August 10, August 17 and August 24. Chair yoga provides a gentle and accessible way for community members to remain active, improve flexibility and enjoy time with others.
The Mountain Arts Center continues to showcase the talent and traditions of Eastern Kentucky. Front Porch Pickin’ is scheduled for August 14 at 7 p.m. The event gives local musicians and music lovers an opportunity to come together and celebrate the sound of Appalachia.
Residents looking for a fun evening out can also find karaoke events at Music Paradise throughout August. Scheduled dates include August 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22 and 28. These gatherings give community members a chance to sing, laugh and support a local business.
Floyd County is also seeing hopeful progress for families affected by historic flooding. New Hope Estates, a high-ground housing community, is being developed to provide safer homes outside flood-prone areas. Earlier this year, local and state leaders celebrated the completion of the first homes in the planned development. The project represents more than construction—it represents stability, recovery and renewed hope for families who have endured tremendous loss.
Meanwhile, Floyd County Schools recently received funding through the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for the 2026–27 school year. The program will provide fresh produce to students at participating elementary schools while encouraging healthy eating habits.
These events and developments show that Floyd County is continuing to move forward. Whether residents attend a local performance, participate in a free wellness activity, support students returning to school or simply check on a neighbor, every act of involvement helps strengthen our community.
