Staying Home for Education
I was planning the summer sessions for Valley Parks and Recreation this afternoon and I thought about the students who graduated from Custer County High School last week. I met with my board at Valley Park and Recreation and the Old Westcliff School House. As I walked in for the first time in thirty years, the last time I was the Director, the schoolhouse was operated as a Museum and Parks and Recreation Center. Nowadays a Christian School has taken it over. I entered my old office, in the great room there are many walls with desks attached together and the floors have bowed a bit. It looks more like an old school house than ever before- and maybe that is the way it should look and feel. Sound Century Academy of Recording Arts will be training students in recording arts, broadcasting and podcasting. On June 9th we will host Agrarian Voices and connect with The Berry Center in Kentucky. There are Tennis Lessons on Fridays, Wet Mountain Youth Baseball on Thursdays, and an introduction to FlingGolf and fundraising tournaments in Wiffle Ball, and Adult Softball. With the World Cup coming to America, we are hoping for a resurgence in Youth Soccer. The Valley at one time had a vibrant program with Pat O'Conner and Gold Miner Soccer.
An Education in Home Economics
We will be booking original music at an Old Westcliff Coffee House and have really good coffee and tea service. Yet my favorite partnership is with the Colorado Chapter of the Leadon Family Foundation and growing community through entrepreneurship for generations to come. The Emergent Campus in Trinidad and Florence is training NXT Gen Innovators and Homestand is training students in preserving traditional and family ranching and farming and being sustained by a local Main Street Economy. A partnership with Main Street America, Denver Botanic Gardens as well as TAG Teams forming all over the state. TAG Team is the Think and Act Group that will bring journalists, entrepreneurs and citizens together to help solve the challenges we have as a state and region.
