The Art, The Trinkets, and The Knoxville Thrift Stores That Brought Them Home
My fiancee once said, "It's probably your designing but I feel like there's something about the She Shed that makes people feel at home when they come in."
And that is exactly what our apartment is: our home. That is how I want people to feel when they walk through the door. It is filled with pieces that show who lives here and that it is a family home. This didn't happen overnight, it took time, a lot of shopping trips where I left empty handed and a whole lot of patience.

I didn't buy most of the things in our home at department stores like HomeGoods, Target and Walmart (but trust me, we have Walmart and Amazon furniture too - we are realistic here) but instead spent a lot of time combing through aisles at Knoxville thrift stores.

Here is a look around our home and the thrift stores that helped fill it.
Ladies of Charity
120 W Baxter Ave, Knoxville TN
Price: $

This is one of my favorite thrift stores in all of Knoxville. Right next to Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Ladies of Charity has anything from diapers to jewelry to furniture. Their ultimate goal is to help the local community and their prices reflect that. Although this one requires more searching, if you love the hunt this is your place!
KARM
733 Hall of Fame Drive, Knoxville TN
Price:$$

Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries is known around Knoxville and you are more than likely to have a KARM near you, no matter where you are located. I frequent their downtown location the most, however there has been a recent price increase from when I first started shopping, however, there are still some great and cheap finds here too!
America's Thrift
9123 Executive Park Dr NW, Knoxville, TN
Price: $

America's Thrift is one of my favorite places to shop for clothes and home decor. It’s the kind of place where you never quite know what you’ll find, but you always leave with something that feels like it was waiting for you.
Bargain Hunters: Antique & Indoor Flea Market
4006 Chapman Hwy, Knoxville, TN
Price: $$$

This place is huge and filled with so many booths. The prices are higher but that's because other people have sourced their pieces. However, I've found some of my favorite pieces from there!
Every piece in our home has a place, but more importantly, it has a story. Some of them I can point to immediately and remember where I was, what I was wearing, the exact moment I knew I couldn’t leave it behind. Others I’ve forgotten until someone asks, and then I get to smile and remember, like reopening a little time capsule tucked into everyday life.

That’s the quiet magic of thrifting. It makes you pay attention. It teaches you patience in a world that wants everything instantly. And it fills a home not with things that simply match, but with things that mean something, even if that meaning is just a good afternoon spent wandering aisles with no real plan.
Our apartment doesn’t feel finished, and I hope it never does. I hope it always stays a little in progress, always making room for the next story we’ll stumble into. A new painting on a random wall. A trinket that makes no sense until it suddenly does. A chair that wasn’t needed until it felt like it belonged.
Because in the end, it was never really about decorating a space. It was about building a home that feels like a deep breath when you walk through the door. A place where people linger a little longer than they meant to. A place where life is actually lived and not just styled.
And I think that’s the kind of Tennessee home I’ll always be trying to create.
