The mayor of Punta del Este, Javier Carballal, detailed the Municipality's plan to widen Juan Gorlero Avenue and restore its former width. The work will be accompanied by changes to traffic flow on the Peninsula.

The proposal aims to remove the traffic islands located on Gorlero Avenue since the 1997 renovation and reorganize traffic in the area. He explained that the projected width will be similar to the avenue's current width at Plaza Artigas.

When asked if the widening of the sidewalks represented a challenge to the original plan, which was to transform Gorlero into a pedestrian promenade, the mayor maintained that "it was a different Punta del Este, with a different vision." a

Carballal pointed out that the resort's traffic patterns have completely changed in the last three decades. The renovations to Gorlero Avenue aren't expected to impact the upcoming tourist season.
