Tinubu Extends Europe Stay as Shettima Represents Nigeria at UNGA
President Bola Tinubu will return to Nigeria at the weekend after extending his working vacation in Europe by several days, according to the Presidency.
Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 for London as part of his annual leave. He subsequently travelled to Paris, where he held meetings with senior French and international business figures.
The extension means the President will spend additional days in Europe before returning to Nigeria.
President Remains in Contact With Officials
The Presidency said Tinubu has continued to monitor developments in Nigeria and direct government affairs while away.
Among the matters he has addressed was the death of suspected illegal miners detained by the NSCDC in Niger State.
Tinubu ordered an investigation into the deaths and directed authorities to establish whether negligence, abuse or other violations contributed to the incident.
Shettima Handles UNGA Representation
Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently in New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
The Vice President is representing Tinubu at the gathering and is scheduled to deliver Nigeria's national statement.
The Presidency said Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, will continue to represent the President at official events in Nigeria where required.
Tinubu's Paris Engagements
Tinubu's working vacation has included diplomatic and business engagements.
In Paris, he met French President Emmanuel Macron and Vincent Bolloré.
According to the State House, Bolloré's group outlined plans to increase its investment and local operations in Nigeria's creative and digital economy, including film, entertainment and fibre-optic infrastructure.
Presidency Responds to UNGA Criticism
The Presidency also addressed criticism concerning Tinubu's decision not to attend the UN General Assembly in person.
Onanuga criticised statements from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a US-based lobbying firm over the President's absence.
The Presidency said Nigeria's representation at the international gathering remains assured through Shettima, who will deliver the country's national statement.
Political Consultations Continue
The State House also said political activities involving members of the President's political camp have continued while he is away.
It said Senator Abubakar Yari, Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, has been leading consultations with prominent traditional rulers.
Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the weekend after the additional days of his working vacation.
