With the 2027 presidential election gradually taking shape, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is facing what many political observers describe as one of the most difficult decisions of his campaign — selecting a running mate capable of strengthening his chances against incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other opposition contenders.

Following his emergence as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), attention has shifted from Atiku's victory at the party's primary to the strategic calculations surrounding the vice-presidential slot. Political analysts argue that the choice could significantly influence the outcome of the 2027 election.

Several names have emerged as possible contenders for the position, including former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Imo State governor Emeka Ihedioha, and media entrepreneur Dele Momodu. However, party stakeholders remain divided on which candidate offers the best electoral advantage.

Reports indicate that many within the ADC favor a candidate from the South-East geopolitical zone, believing such a choice could help Atiku broaden his appeal and strengthen support in a region considered crucial to the opposition's electoral calculations.

The situation is further complicated by the presence of other influential opposition figures, particularly Peter Obi, whose political influence remains strong in the South-East. Some analysts argue that selecting a running mate from the region may not automatically translate into votes if Obi remains a major contender.

Meanwhile, speculation surrounding Amaechi's possible emergence has faced obstacles after the former transportation minister repeatedly insisted that he is pursuing his own presidential ambitions and is not interested in serving as a vice-presidential candidate.

Party insiders have also suggested that Atiku may leave the final decision to the ADC's National Working Committee and National Executive Committee, allowing party organs to recommend the most suitable candidate based on consultations across the country.

Political observers note that Atiku's running mate must satisfy multiple criteria, including regional balance, electoral strength, party unity, and the ability to attract undecided voters. Achieving all these objectives in a politically fragmented environment presents a significant challenge.

As consultations continue, the vice-presidential selection is expected to remain one of the most closely watched developments ahead of the 2027 general election. For Atiku and the ADC, choosing the right running mate could prove decisive in shaping the party's fortunes in what is already expected to be a fiercely contested race.
