Jega, Nine Eminent Nigerians Urge FG to Appoint Special Envoy for Sahel Amid Rising Insecurity

Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Abdullahi Jega, alongside nine other prominent Nigerians, has called on the Federal Government to appoint a Special Envoy to the Sahel region in response to growing security challenges and instability across West Africa.

The distinguished group expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel, warning that the increasing activities of armed groups, political instability, and cross-border crimes pose significant threats to Nigeria and the wider region.

In a statement, the concerned citizens emphasized the need for a coordinated diplomatic and security strategy to address the complex challenges affecting countries within the Sahel. They argued that appointing a Special Envoy would strengthen Nigeria’s engagement with neighboring nations and regional organizations in tackling insecurity.

According to the group, developments in countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have direct implications for Nigeria's national security, particularly in border communities vulnerable to the movement of armed groups and illicit activities.

The eminent Nigerians noted that a dedicated envoy would serve as a strategic link between Nigeria and key stakeholders in the region, helping to promote dialogue, intelligence sharing, conflict resolution, and regional cooperation.

They further stressed that Nigeria, as a leading power in West Africa, has a critical role to play in fostering peace, stability, and democratic governance across the Sahel. The group urged the Federal Government to act swiftly and proactively to prevent the worsening security situation from spilling over into Nigeria.

Security analysts have also highlighted the growing importance of regional collaboration in addressing threats that transcend national borders, including terrorism, banditry, arms trafficking, and organized crime.

The call comes amid increasing concerns over the humanitarian and security consequences of instability in the Sahel, with experts warning that sustained efforts will be required to safeguard peace and development across the region.

Observers believe that the appointment of a Special Envoy could enhance Nigeria's diplomatic influence and contribute to a more coordinated response to the challenges confronting the Sahel and West Africa as a whole.
