The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has called on Nigerians to preserve the legacy of the nation’s June 12 democratic struggle, insisting that the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists must not be allowed to go in vain.

Speaking during commemorations marking Democracy Day, the SDP flagbearer said the struggles of Nigerians who fought for the restoration of democratic rule in the 1990s should serve as a reminder of the need for accountable governance, credible elections, and respect for the rule of law.

June 12 remains one of the most symbolic dates in Nigeria’s political history, marked by the annulled 1993 presidential election widely believed to have been won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale MKO Abiola. The annulment sparked nationwide protests and years of agitation for the return of civilian rule.

The SDP candidate noted that the heroes of that era endured imprisonment, exile, and even death in the struggle to secure democratic freedoms for the country. He stressed that honoring their sacrifices goes beyond ceremonial remembrance and must reflect in improved governance and political accountability.

He urged political leaders at all levels to prioritize the welfare of citizens, strengthen democratic institutions, and ensure that elections are free, fair, and transparent. According to him, failure to address these issues would amount to betrayal of the ideals for which many Nigerians fought.

The candidate also called on young Nigerians to take active roles in shaping the country’s political future, emphasizing that democracy can only thrive when citizens remain engaged and vigilant.

Observers say Democracy Day has become an important moment for reflection on Nigeria’s democratic journey, particularly amid ongoing debates about economic challenges, insecurity, and governance reforms.

As the nation marks another June 12 anniversary, calls continue to grow for leaders to deepen democratic practices and ensure that the sacrifices of past heroes translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
