Five Americans Killed in a Helicopter Crash in Kenya

Seven people, including five American tourists, have been confirmed dead in a helicopter crash that happened on Wednesday morning in the expansive Samburu jungle, located in northern Kenya.
Kenyan officials reported that all seven people (a pilot and six passengers) on board the ill-fated helicopter perished in the 9:13 am crash. The helicopter was taking the tourists on a safari tour from Loisaba Conservancy to Ewaso Nyiro, according to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, but the Aviation Authority has revealed that investigations have commenced. Although the victims’ names haven’t been officially released, reports indicate that the head of Ecuador’s National Intelligence Center, 42-year-old Sensi Contugi, his wife Stephany Hollihan Vasconez (an American), and Telemundo’s president and general manager, Jose Alberto Suarez, were among the passengers who died.
“We are heartbroken to learn the tragic news that Jose was killed in a helicopter accident in Kenya,” an NBCUniversal affiliate TV station in Miami said in a statement.
The US State Department has confirmed that five of the dead passengers were US citizens, adding that the US Embassy in Kenya is working with local authorities to offer consular assistance.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones on their loss,” the State Department said.
Reports of the crash first emerged on social media through amateur videos that claimed to show the remote area in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe where the helicopter plunged. The Eurocopter EC130 B4 was owned by Lady Lori Helicopters, a local company that operates charter flights in the region.
Four bodies were recovered on Wednesday evening, but the search and rescue operations had to be postponed to Thursday morning due to the sweltering flames and unforgiving terrain at the crash site.
Helicopter crashes have become quite common in the hilly northern and western parts of Kenya. Six months ago, a Kenyan legislator, Johana Ng’eno, together with five of his companions, perished in a similar crash while travelling from a political meeting in the North Rift region of Kenya.
