2027 Presidency: Tinubu and Atiku Likely to Face Off Again, Predicts Segun Sowunmi
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Sowunmi, has predicted that Nigeria's 2027 presidential election could once again be a contest between incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Sowunmi made the prediction while discussing the evolving political landscape ahead of the next general election, arguing that both politicians remain influential figures with extensive political structures and nationwide recognition.

According to him, despite ongoing discussions about generational change and the emergence of new political movements, Tinubu and Atiku continue to command significant support within their respective political camps. He noted that their experience, political networks, and ability to mobilize supporters could make them formidable contenders in 2027.
The prediction comes amid increasing political consultations and realignments across party lines as politicians begin positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle. Several opposition figures have been exploring coalition arrangements aimed at challenging the ruling party, while the governing party is expected to rally behind President Tinubu should he seek a second term.
Sowunmi maintained that Nigerian politics has often been shaped by established political actors who possess strong grassroots structures and nationwide appeal. He argued that any aspirant hoping to challenge such figures would need to build a credible political platform capable of competing across the country's diverse regions.
Political analysts remain divided on the likelihood of another Tinubu-Atiku contest. While some agree that both men remain central figures in Nigerian politics, others believe changing voter expectations, economic realities, and the emergence of younger political leaders could reshape the electoral landscape before 2027.
The 2023 presidential election saw Tinubu emerge victorious after a closely contested race involving Atiku and other leading candidates. Since then, discussions about the future direction of Nigeria's politics have continued, with attention increasingly turning toward the next election cycle.
As political activities gradually gather momentum, parties are expected to intensify consultations, coalition talks, and internal reforms in preparation for what could become one of the most consequential elections in Nigeria's democratic history.
Whether Sowunmi's prediction ultimately proves accurate remains to be seen, but his comments have added to the growing debate over who will emerge as the major contenders in the race for Nigeria's highest office in 2027.
