Zimbabwean Businessman Wicknell Chivayo, His Wife Die in Helicopter Crash

Prominent and controversial Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke, and 4 others have died in a helicopter crash that killed all six people aboard, according to Zimbabwean authorities and his family.

The helicopter crashed on Wednesday, September 30, in the Marondera Rural area, about 70 kilometres east of Harare. Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana said the aircraft was carrying a high-profile businessman, three other passengers and two pilots, and that there were no survivors.

The deceased businessman was well-known for his close relationship with Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa and frequent interactions with regional leaders, including the Kenyan President William Ruto, who has already sent his condolence message on X.

“Wicknell was a dear friend whose warmth touched many people. I will remember him for his friendship, his energy and his deep conviction in the possibilities of our continent,” Ruto wrote.

Chivayo often displayed his wealth and political affiliations on social media, gifting expensive items to celebrities, religious leaders, and followers. His business and political activities had previously attracted scrutiny and accusations related to public procurement and election funding and fraud, although he denied any wrongdoing.

Chivayo's family has since confirmed that the businessman and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were among those killed. Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa also confirmed Chivayo's death on Thursday, October 1.

The Tycoon, who was in his early-to-mid 40s, was one of Zimbabwe's most prominent and publicly visible businessmen. He built his profile through interests in energy and infrastructure, including Intratrek Zimbabwe, which was awarded a major contract for the Gwanda solar power project.

He was also widely known for his lavish lifestyle and high-profile charitable gifts, frequently sharing images and videos of luxury vehicles, cash donations, and meetings with prominent political and religious figures.

Authorities have begun investigating the helicopter crash, while efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident and formally identify all victims continue.
