A dental hygienist is a licensed oral healthcare provider who offers teeth cleanings, preventive dental care and oral hygiene instruction. Dental hygienists work with dentists to keep patient’s teeth and gums healthy. All states require dental hygienists to be licensed; requirements vary by state.

The National Dental Hygienist Association (NDHA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization designed to improve the dental health of the public through education and service. Headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Founded in 1932, by Ernestine P. Gates of Missouri and African American Dental Hygienists to address the problems faced by African American hygienists in the profession. As well as unite the limited number of minority dental hygiene practitioners in the United States. Initially the organization functioned for three years but lost visibility.

In the spring of 1962, Dr. James B Singleton, Dr. Eugenie Mobley and Barbara Ashby Robinson of Meharry Medical College contacted their extensive network of African American Dental Hygienists. Inviting them to meet in Detroit, Michigan for the National Dental Association convention. During the convention the NDHA was reestablished and implemented a restructuring initiative to enhance the visibility of the association.

In 1963, NDHA elected its first President, Barbara Ashley. The NDHA formed alliances with other dental associations like the National Dental Association. While, these organizations hold their functions jointly, the NDHA functions as an autonomous organization.

NDHA is a Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) organization rooted in a legacy of advocacy for the underserved and the ongoing pursuit of health equity. They promote justice in the dental profession, healthcare at large, and society overall. By cultivating a safe and inclusive environment for their members, staff, and partners regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

The current board president is Ja Nae Jamison Kimbell, M.ED, RDH. Kimbell brings a decade of professional experience to her role as President of the National Dental Hygienists’ Association. Her presidency marks a renewed commitment to the organization’s mission: promoting the highest educational and ethical standards for dental hygienists, expanding oral health access in underserved communities, and increasing minority representation within the profession.

Kimbell is a proud graduate of Fisk University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She later obtained her Dental Hygiene degree through the joint program at Meharry Medical College and Tennessee State University, followed by a master’s degree in Career and Technical Education from Concordia University. Served in key leadership roles in dental education, including positions as a Dental Hygiene Instructor and Dental Assisting Program Director.

July 16th-18th is the 2026 NDHA Annual Conference. Taking place at the Richmond Convention Center, Richmond, Virgina. The National Dental Hygienists’ Association invites oral health professionals, educators, students, and industry partners to attend a transformative experience that bridges innovation, inclusion, and impact.
