Former Senator representing Bayelsa East, Ben Murray-Bruce, has shed light on the political events that led to the defection of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and five other governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Speaking on the circumstances surrounding the high-profile defections, Murray-Bruce said the crisis within the PDP at the time was fueled by deep internal disagreements, leadership disputes, and dissatisfaction among some influential party members.

According to him, the inability of the party's leadership to effectively manage internal grievances created divisions that eventually prompted Amaechi and the five governors to leave the PDP for the opposition, a move that significantly altered Nigeria's political landscape.

The governors, popularly known as the "G-5 governors" at the time of the defection, were among key political figures who aligned with the opposition, strengthening its chances in the 2015 presidential election.

Murray-Bruce noted that the defections weakened the PDP's political structure and contributed to the eventual electoral victory of the opposition, which brought an end to the PDP's 16-year hold on power at the federal level.

He stressed that political parties must prioritize internal democracy, fairness, and dialogue if they hope to remain united and competitive, warning that unresolved internal conflicts often result in defections and electoral setbacks.

Political analysts believe the events leading to the 2015 elections remain one of the most significant turning points in Nigeria's democratic history, reshaping the country's political alignments and influencing subsequent elections.

Murray-Bruce's comments have reignited discussions about party unity and the lessons political stakeholders can learn from the circumstances that preceded the historic 2015 general elections.
