ESTEVAO, NETO AND THE ISSUE OF WINGERS BEING TURNED INTO WINGBACKS

The issue of Alonso likely trying to use estevao as a wingback as been raised by Gus Poyet after the news of estevao's unhappiness at been sidelined by Alonso surfaced. He touched on Hudson_odoi facing the same issue when Tuchel asked him to revert back to a WB as opposed to his natural position, which later serve as one of the catalysts of him leaving Chelsea.

He also talked about Neto not wholeheartedly playing the RWB role because of the added defensive responsibilities, something that was on display with the recent on_field argument with Reece James against Fulham.

Now, pure wingers being asked to compromise and play more defensively just to get a game may not necessarily sit well with the lot of them which might result in the defensive balance of the whole team being at stake.

Not all wingers will be a Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Juan Cuadrado. All these names were more than happy to change roles and become a full fledged Wingback/Fullback.

My take is that estevao, who's a great talent, is a pure and applied winger_cum #10, he must not be used in an unfamiliar position just to get him into the team. He's not even physical enough and playing him as a WB will totally deflate his confidence and swagger, and eventually push him out of Stamford Bridge.

He'll definitely get his chance this season. He should also understand that he's just coming off the back of a brutal injury, and his swift recovery was a miracle that surprised even his physios, so Alonso is just been cautious about breaking him in too early and risking a relapse of his injury.
