"It's Not Only Akara" — Remi Tinubu Defends Remarks, Says FG Also Supports Tomato, Pepper Sellers
Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has defended her recent remarks about the Federal Government's support for small-scale businesses, stating that government empowerment programmes are not limited to akara (bean cake) sellers but also benefit tomato, pepper, and other petty traders.
Speaking during a public engagement, the First Lady said the administration's economic empowerment initiatives are designed to support a wide range of micro and small businesses across the country, particularly women and vulnerable groups.

She explained that the programmes provide financial assistance, grants, and other forms of support to help beneficiaries expand their businesses, improve their livelihoods, and contribute to local economic development.
Responding to criticism over her earlier comments, Remi Tinubu stressed that the government's intervention extends beyond a single trade, emphasizing that traders dealing in tomatoes, peppers, food items, and other essential commodities are also among the beneficiaries.
Her remarks have sparked renewed public debate, with supporters saying the programmes are helping grassroots entrepreneurs, while critics have called for broader economic reforms to address inflation, unemployment, and the rising cost of living.
The Federal Government maintains that its empowerment initiatives are part of a broader strategy to strengthen small businesses, reduce poverty, and promote inclusive economic growth across Nigeria.
