VETERAN NOLLYWOOD ICON OLU JACOBS DIES AT 84
The Nigerian entertainment industry is in deep mourning following the death of legendary actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, at the age of 84.
Affectionately referred to as the "Lion of Lufodo," his death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, on behalf of the family.
A Towering Legacy
Global & Local Training: Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs trained at London's prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He built a formidable career spanning over five decades, beginning with British television and international films in the 1970s and 1980s before returning to Nigeria to help pioneer and shape modern Nollywood.
On-Screen Royalty: Renowned for his deep, commanding baritone voice and dignified screen presence, Jacobs famously portrayed patriarchs, kings, chiefs, and traditional rulers, earning widespread admiration as a foundational pillar of African cinema.
Accolades: Over his illustrious career, he received numerous prestigious honors, including the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Leading Role, the AMVCA Industry Merit Award, and the national honor of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).
He is survived by his wife of over three decades, fellow veteran actress Joke Silva, as well as children and grandchildren. Tributes continue to pour in from fans, colleagues, and leaders across the continent honoring a true icon of the stage and screen.
