Former Edo State Governor and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has endorsed the proposal by his successor, Governor Monday Okpebholo, to impose the death penalty on convicted kidnappers and bandits.

Oshiomhole expressed support for the move, describing kidnapping and banditry as grave threats to public safety and national security. He argued that stronger legal sanctions could serve as a deterrent to violent crimes that have claimed numerous lives and disrupted communities across the country.

The proposal, championed by Governor Okpebholo, is aimed at strengthening the state's response to the growing menace of kidnapping and armed banditry. It is expected to undergo the necessary legislative process before it can become law.

The proposal has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. While supporters believe tougher penalties are necessary to curb violent crime, critics have called for caution, emphasizing the need to ensure fair trials, respect for constitutional safeguards, and effective law enforcement.

The debate adds to the ongoing national conversation on how best to tackle insecurity, with many stakeholders advocating a combination of stronger laws, improved policing, intelligence gathering, and judicial reforms.
