"Little Worlds" Brings Wonder & Whimsy to San Antonio This November

San Antonio's creative scene gets a little more whimsical this fall. "Little Worlds," a free art event curated by Texas muralist Zando (@zandopop), takes over No Mas Studios on Saturday, November 14th, from 6 to 10 p.m.

This event leans into the mystical realms of wonder and whimsy, bringing characters and atmospheres from universes of all kinds to San Antonio. The night includes an art exhibit, local vendors, a community doodle board, and a collaborative wall where attendees can paint their own cute characters! Closing out the evening is a mini rave with DJ RIK spinning house, techno, hardstyle, and trance music!

No Mas Studios is located at 110 E Lachapelle in San Antonio. The admission is free!

Zando put out an open call for artists and vendors earlier this month, welcoming all mediums-especially work that is cute, silly, colorful, and full of whimsy! A few spots are still open; interested artists and vendors can reach her directly via Instagram DM @zandopop.

I caught up with Zando ahead of the event:

Q: Where did the "Little Worlds" theme come from — what sparked it?

A: Nothing called to me more than creating a space where everyone could be able to express another side of themselves. Especially when it is silly, cute and whimsy. When I was a child, I thought being an adult was to be boring and grey but that wasn't the case at all. I love being around people who love creating little guys and their artwork brings joy to others!

Q: What were you looking for when curating the artists? What does whimsy mean to you?

A: I was looking for cute characters, whimsy environments and angelic atmosphere. What whimsy to me means is honestly anything that give me "star eyes". Art that brings a smile to your face, make you feel comfortable, bring you wonder and playfulness.

Q: Why make the audience part of the art with the doodle board and collaborative wall?

A: Everyone should be able to contribute and feel a part of an event. Even if it means just drawing on a blank board! Without them and their energy the space wouldn't feel the same~ I want to see what people can create when there's no judgement! Listen to the music and draw away~

Q: How does the mini rave fit the vision — why pair a gallery night with DJ RIK?

A: The whole event is about fun, being yourself and letting yourself embrace more whimsy. What other form of music that would best suit this event!

Why did I pair with RIK? Well, RIK is my dad. How cool is it to say that I was a part of something with my dad. We are both artist and I get to work with him! He's been a DJ before I was even born and now, I can experience something with him that we love the most, making art that brings people together!

Q: What do you want people to feel walking out at 10 p.m.?

A: Happy! The main goal is to be happy and inspired to be themselves~

Q: Is this a one-off, or the start of something recurring?

A: I do wonder what "Little Worlds" would be if I had the budget but if I can make it a recurring thing that will be great! There's so much art out there that is waiting to be discovered. Waiting to find the right place for them!
