[Fictional Demo] The Bakery on Miller Street Turns 40, and the Line Is Still Out the Door
At 6:12 on a Saturday morning, the line outside Hartwell's Bakery on Miller Street was already fourteen people deep. By 6:30 it had wrapped past the flower shop. This is normal. It has been normal, more or less, for forty years.
"We didn't plan a party," co-owner Dana Hartwell told me, flour up to both elbows. "But apparently the neighborhood did." Regulars organized a card — an actual poster board, signed by more than two hundred customers — and someone commissioned a cake. For a bakery. Dana found this very funny. "It was good cake," she admitted. "We'd have hired them."

The Hartwells' cinnamon knot recipe hasn't changed since 1986, when Dana's father allegedly won it in a bowling bet — a story the family has never confirmed and never quite denied.
Forty years of early mornings is a long time to feed a town. Here's to forty more.
