Lionel Messi tackled by pitch invader during chaotic friendly in Puerto Rico
A chaotic scene unfolded Thursday night in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, when Lionel Messi was brought to the ground by an overzealous pitch invader during Inter Miami's friendly match against Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle.
The incident occurred in the 88th minute at Estadio Juan Ramón Loubriel, where 12,500 fans had packed the venue to witness the Argentine superstar in action. What began as scattered fans rushing onto the field quickly escalated into a security nightmare.

The match itself served as a makeup fixture for a game originally scheduled for February 13th. That date was postponed after Messi experienced hamstring discomfort during a warm-up exhibition against Barcelona SC in Ecuador. Event organizers, working with Puerto Rican government officials, rescheduled for February 26th—just five days after Miami's disappointing 3-0 season-opening loss to LAFC in Los Angeles.
Adding to the evening's peculiarities, kickoff was delayed by a full hour due to uniform complications. Both teams ultimately took the field in predominantly black kits, creating confusion for spectators trying to distinguish between the sides.
Miami manager Javier Mascherano fielded a rotated squad to start, resting several players who featured in the Los Angeles opener. Messi came on at halftime and converted a penalty kick to help secure a 2-1 victory for the visitors.
But it was the final minutes that descended into pandemonium. Fans began streaming onto the pitch from behind Miami's goal. One invader sprinted past midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, making a beeline for Messi. A security guard managed to redirect the fan initially, but two more young supporters—one wearing a Barcelona shirt, the other in Miami colors—followed in pursuit of selfies and autographs.
The first pitch invader, who had shed his shirt during the chase, eventually circled back and wrapped his arms around Messi's waist from behind. In attempting to tackle the fan, a security guard inadvertently brought both the invader and Messi crashing to the turf inside the center circle.
Messi quickly got to his feet, appearing unharmed but visibly bewildered by the sequence. Notably, none of his Miami teammates rushed to his aid during the melee. Instead, it was Independiente's Paraguayan striker Carlos González who approached first, putting a protective arm around the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner as officials worked to clear additional fans from the field.
The victory keeps Miami's preseason preparations moving forward, though the team faces a quick turnaround. They'll travel to face Florida rivals Orlando City on Sunday evening—less than 72 hours after Thursday's exhibition.
For Independiente del Valle, the friendly came on the heels of a 2-0 league victory over Guayaquil City last weekend. They return to competitive action Monday with an away fixture against Manta FC in Ecuador's LigaPro.
