Sexual violence is a predominant problem across India. It is one of the country's human rights issues. The United Nations and other groups have found that there is a difference between the number of crimes that are reported and the number of crimes that are actually prevented. Even though India has made its laws stronger over the ten years, the problem of sexual violence is still very serious.

The problem of violence is huge around the world. The United Nations Children's Fund says that more than 370 million women and girls have been raped or sexually assaulted before they turn 18. That is one in eight women and girls worldwide. This makes India, which has a lot of women, a part of the problem. In India 29.3% of women say they have been physically or sexually abused by someone they are in a relationship with.

The official crime records in India do not show the picture. The National Crime Records Bureau says that over 30,000 rape cases are reported every year. In 2021 there were 31,677 cases reported. That is 86 cases every day. Experts and reports from the United Nations say that these numbers are much lower than the real numbers. This is because many women are afraid to report the crimes; they are ashamed. They do not trust the police. Some reports have even said that a rape is reported every 15 minutes.

One of the disturbing things about sexual violence in India is that it is usually committed by someone the victim knows. Studies have found that in 85-90% of cases the person who committed the crime is a family member, relative, or friend. This is similar to what the United Nations has found, which is that the home is often the most dangerous place for women.

Even though many people are outraged by violence, especially after big cases like the 2012 Delhi gang rape, the problem is still not being solved. There are reasons for this. First, many cases are not reported because of shame, fear of being blamed, or fear of being ostracized. Second, it is hard to get convictions, and cases often take years to be resolved. Third, many people in India still think that sexual violence is not a big deal, or they think it is the victim's fault.

There are reasons why the national and regional leaders are not able to make changes. One reason is that they are afraid of losing votes if they make changes. Another reason is that the police are controlled by the states, so the federal government cannot make changes easily. There is also a lot of resistance to changing the way people think about gender. The different parts of the government like the courts and the police do not always work together.

Many experts say that just making the punishment for rape stricter is not enough. They say that the punishment is not always enforced, so it does not stop people from committing the crime. They think that India needs to make changes like creating special courts for rape cases, protecting the victims, and making the police more accountable. They also think that India needs to educate people about gender and sexual violence.

The result is that India has some laws against rape, but it is still not able to stop the problem. The United Nations has said that just changing the laws is not enough. India needs to change the way people think and the way the government works.

Until the politicians are willing to make changes, the problem of sexual violence will continue. They need to stop making statements and start taking action. They need to work to make sure that the laws are enforced and that the victims are protected.
