North Carolina Governor Signs Relief At The Pump Into Law

  • North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein signed House Bill 3, temporarily suspending the state’s 41-cent-per-gallon gas tax through Nov. 30 to provide financial relief to drivers. However, motorists may experience delays in seeing lower prices as gas stations sell existing fuel inventory.

Governor Josh Stein officially enacted House Bill 3 on Friday, implementing a temporary pause on North Carolina's 41-cent-per-gallon gas tax that will remain in effect until November 30th.

This tax suspension aims to deliver financial relief to motorists, though it may require several days before gas station prices adjust to reflect this change.

Most gas stations replenish their fuel inventory every two to four days, so the timing of their latest fuel purchase and their sales velocity will determine when drivers experience reduced prices.

Stein signed the Relief at the Pump bill just two days following lawmakers' decision to convene an emergency legislative session to advance the legislation. The governor characterized the initiative as politically timed for the upcoming midterm elections, a claim that Republican lawmakers have refuted.

Following the bill's signing, Stein urged lawmakers to maintain their commitment to reducing expenses for North Carolina residents.
