Bluffdale parents released from jail as prosecutors seek more evidence in infant's death

  • Their 3-month-old son, Atreyu Nick Romero, was found unresponsive at their Bluffdale home; an autopsy was performed, but his cause of death has not been released.
  • Investigators alleged that alcohol and substance use, along with unsafe sleeping conditions, put the infant in substantial danger.
  • The couple’s 3-month-old daughter died in October 2024 in a separate, pending investigation that authorities described as similar.

Bluffdale police submitted the case to the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office, which asked detectives to complete additional investigative work before resubmitting it. The couple, arrested on suspicion of child abuse homicide after their son’s death, were released with conditions while prosecutors review the case. Arrest documents say the parents told investigators they had been drinking and fell asleep in the same bed as their infant; investigators alleged their substance use and unsafe sleeping conditions created substantial danger. Court documents said the earlier death of their daughter heightened their awareness of unsafe infant-sleeping risks. The investigation remains active, and prosecutors have not said when the case will return for review or whether charges will be filed.
