Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has revealed plans to sponsor a bill seeking to introduce a single six-year tenure for Nigerian presidents and state governors after the 2027 general elections.

According to Bamidele, the proposed legislation is aimed at enhancing effective governance by eliminating the distractions associated with re-election campaigns. He stated that the bill would be among the first pieces of legislation he intends to introduce when the next Senate is inaugurated.

Speaking with journalists in his office on Tuesday, the lawmaker argued that the current constitutional provision of two four-year terms often forces elected leaders to spend a significant portion of their first term focusing on political calculations and strategies for securing a second term.

Bamidele explained that a single six-year tenure would allow presidents and governors to concentrate fully on delivering good governance, implementing policies, and executing developmental projects without the pressure of seeking re-election.

“One of the first set of bills that I look forward to moving, by God's grace, when we come back for the 11th Senate, God willing, is for a bill that will only make it possible for anyone who wants to be president of this country, or governor in any part of this country, to spend only one term of six years,” he said.

The Senate Leader noted that the proposed reform could strengthen leadership focus, improve policy continuity, and reduce the political tensions that often accompany election cycles.

If passed into law, the bill would represent a significant constitutional amendment and could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape by changing the tenure structure for the nation's highest elected offices.
