Miami Beach Convention Center Hotel Construction Progresses Toward 2027 Opening
MIAMI BEACH — Construction is advancing on schedule for the Miami Beach Grand Hyatt convention center hotel, a transformative project that will reshape the city's hospitality and convention landscape.
The $550 million development, located adjacent to the Miami Beach Convention Center at 1801 Convention Center Drive, represents one of South Florida's most ambitious hospitality projects in recent years. The 800-room luxury hotel is being developed through a partnership between the City of Miami Beach and Portman Holdings, with construction management by Suffolk Construction.

Project Scope and Details
The Grand Hyatt will span approximately 34 stories and include 800 guest rooms, 65,000 square feet of meeting space, multiple restaurants and bars, a rooftop pool deck, and a full-service spa. The hotel is specifically designed to serve convention attendees while also attracting leisure travelers to Miami Beach.
"This project will significantly enhance Miami Beach's ability to compete for major conventions and conferences," said City Manager Alina Hudak. "The seamless connection between the hotel and convention center will provide an unparalleled experience for event organizers and attendees."
The development also includes ground-floor retail space and improved pedestrian connections to the surrounding neighborhood. Architectural firm Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates designed the property to complement Miami Beach's Art Deco heritage while incorporating modern sustainable building practices.
Key Players
The project brings together several major industry players:
- Developer: Portman Holdings, the development arm of John Portman & Associates
- Hotel Operator: Hyatt Hotels Corporation will manage the property under its Grand Hyatt brand
- General Contractor: Suffolk Construction is overseeing all construction activities
- Architect: Nichols Brosch Wurst Wolfe & Associates
- Owner: City of Miami Beach
The city is financing the project through a combination of convention development taxes and revenue bonds, with the hotel operator paying lease payments to the municipality.
Construction Timeline
Groundbreaking occurred in early 2024, with foundation work and structural steel installation currently underway. The project is tracking toward substantial completion in late 2026, with the grand opening scheduled for early 2027.
"We're pleased with the progress to date," said Suffolk Construction Project Executive Michael Torres. "The team has worked diligently to maintain our schedule despite supply chain challenges and weather-related delays typical of South Florida construction."
The development is expected to create approximately 1,200 construction jobs during the build-out phase and 600 permanent hospitality positions once operational.
Economic Impact
City officials project the hotel will generate significant economic benefits for Miami Beach, including increased convention bookings, higher hotel tax revenues, and enhanced competitiveness against other major convention destinations like Orlando and Las Vegas.
The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau estimates the project could attract an additional 50,000 convention attendees annually, generating millions in direct and indirect economic activity for local businesses.
As construction progresses through 2025 and 2026, the Miami Beach Grand Hyatt convention center hotel is positioned to become a cornerstone of the city's tourism infrastructure and economic development strategy.
