Lions TE Sam LaPorta Faces Fans’ Ire After Contract Comments
- Lions fans mad over LaPorta podcast comments.
Yesterday, Detroit TE Sam LaPorta went on the Pardon My Take podcast and expressed his frustration with not having a long term contract in place.
LaPorta has been a stellar tight since being drafted and easily a top five player at the position.
However, a back injury cut his 2025 season short and the Lions have not extended his contract.
“It’s disappointing that you go out there every week and bear the risk of getting hurt. Like last year, I broke my f—ing back for the team. And then I’m going out there this year and I’m balling, and maybe they’re just not showing the love,” said on the podcast.
He then said he wasn’t concerned and that no matter what he would get paid even if he wasn’t wearing “Honolulu Blue.”
The comments have not sat well with Lion’s fans.
97.1’a Mike Valenti took umbrage with the remarks highlighting how out of touch LaPorta came off.
“Now what do you think it sounds like for fans when they see the last part of if i don't get to wear the Honolulu blue -- whatever. Buddy, what are you doing? And i'll say it again -- read the room. This is the problem. This is where athletes get it wrong. Nobody cares about your problems. You don't have problems. Not like the people who watch you. The only reason you exist, Sam, are the very people who can't afford to buy a home. They can't afford their car payment. They can't afford to live right now ... And then at the end of it you're flippant? Ahh, if I don't get to dawn the jersey -- whatever, I'll get paid somewhere else. Dude. Hope it felt good in the moment because that's a lose-lose.”
