[Fictional Demo] A Note From the Desk: Why I Keep a Typewriter I Never Use

There's a 1948 Royal Quiet De Luxe on the corner of my desk. It doesn't work. The ribbon dried out sometime during the Clinton administration, and the letter "e" strikes about a quarter-inch high, which for the most common letter in the English language is a real problem.

I keep it anyway, and people ask why.

Here's the honest answer: it reminds me that local news used to be heavy. Every word cost something — ink, paper, the physical act of hammering a key. You thought before you typed. When I sit down to write about our community, I try to keep a little of that weight in the process, even though the tools have gotten lighter.
