The NFC East has been shaken up. The Giants are back on top.
- Sports-Talk
The Giants are currently above .500 in the NFC East standings with a 4-2-1 record. Questions about the New York Giants under John Harbaugh were up in the air this season. But it looks like the division is theirs to lose.
The Eagles, Cowboys, and Commanders are all below .500. The Eagles and Cowboys are 2-4, while the Commanders sit at 1-4-1.
Many are asking how the New York Football Giants are currently on top of the NFC East, and it’s simple: There’s a new culture in East Rutherford. John Harbaugh said, “Our focus is simple: it starts with building a team that is physical and tough, that’s capable of overwhelming their opponent from beginning to end, and especially at the end, that understands how to finish, that is smart and disciplined, that plays the game the way it should be played, and that everybody watching it, including those playing it, would be proud of.”
So far this season, the Giants have been able to meet expectations, fighting to the end week after week. Weeks 1,2,3,4 and 6 have all been four-quarter games that came down to the last play.
Additionally, the Giants have already played two overtime games this season, tying the Commanders in week 5 before defeating the Texans in week 7. Both games show how this team has been tested in situations where one play can change the whole outcome.
The New York Giants are making a statement that they’re not a team to be bullied anymore. If you come to face them, they’re going to fight to the very end.
With injuries to star players Jaxson Dart and Brian Burns, there was a lot of uncertainty. Many wondered who the starting quarterback would be moving forward and how the pass rush would be affected without Brian Burns.
First-round pick and star player Abdul Carter has stepped up in a leadership role and as the main pass rusher for the New York Football Giants as they continue their run for the playoffs.
These past few weeks have seemed to live up to expectations of being a whirlwind for New York Giants fans.
Jamies winston got the start after Jaxosn Dart went down with a Knee injury against the Rams in Week 2. What fans call the “Jameis Winston experience” lived up to its hype.
But with so much uncertainty, John Harbaugh went and got quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Vikings, trading a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. McCarthy played under his brother Jim Harbaugh at Michigan, winning a national championship together.
Jamies winston went on to win his first two games against the Tennessee Titans and the Arizona Cardinals, tying with the Commanders in overtime, all of which were four-quarter games, before losing against the Saints.
The Giants benched Winston after a poor first-half performance against the Saints and put in J.J. McCarthy to see what the young quarterback could do. He was able to lead three scoring drives vs. the Saints.
After the Week 6 loss against the Saints, John Harbaugh made the decision to start J.J. McCarthy for a Week 7 matchup against the Houston Texans, known for their great defense.
As a new quarterback learning a new system with a lot of expectations, there was a lot of doubt going into this week’s matchup against a team like Houston, which was starting to find its momentum.
The final score was Giants 27, Texans 21, in overtime. J.J. McCarthy completed his first five passes for 96 yards and finished with 339 passing yards across the fourth quarter against New Orleans and the first half against Houston. Malik Nabers caught a 42-yard pass from McCarthy on the opening drive against Houston as well.
Cam Skattebo rushed for a career-high 124 yards against Houston, and Devin singeltery scored the game-winning touchdown on a 30-yard run in overtime.
McCarthy was able to get his first win as a starter under John Harbaugh. Many were impressed with how poised the young quarterback was, making great layered throws, finding his playmaker in Malik Nabers, and leading the Giants to a win.
Looking toward the future, can J.J. keep this up and lead the New York Giants to the playoffs? Is this success that the Giants are having sustainable?
There are so many questions being asked, including: If Jaxson Dart were to return by the playoffs and J.J. McCarthy continued to play well, who would be the starter of the future?
The Giants found their quarterback, but can he keep the momentum going?
