Vegas Golden Knights Draw First Blood, Defeat Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 in NHL Finals Game 1
LAS VEGAS — The Vegas Golden Knights opened the NHL Stanley Cup Finals in dominant fashion Tuesday night, defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 at T-Mobile Arena to take an early 1-0 series lead.
In front of a sold-out, raucous home crowd, Vegas came out firing from the opening puck drop, setting the tone with an aggressive forecheck that kept Carolina on its heels for much of the first period.
Golden Knights captain Mark Stone led the charge with a goal and two assists, while goaltender Adin Hill turned aside 28 of 30 shots to earn the win. Vegas struck first midway through the opening frame on a power-play goal from Ivan Barbashev, who redirected a sharp pass from Stone past Hurricanes netminder Frederik Andersen.
Carolina responded early in the second period, with Sebastian Aho cutting the deficit to 2-1 with a wrist shot from the left circle. But Vegas answered quickly — Jonathan Marchessault restored the two-goal cushion just 3:47 later, burying a rebound in front to make it 3-1.
The Hurricanes pulled within one again late in the third on a goal from Andrei Svechnikov, but William Karlsson sealed the victory with an empty-netter with 47 seconds remaining, sending the Golden Knights faithful into a frenzy.
"We knew they'd push back," said Stone in the post-game press conference. "But we stayed disciplined, stuck to our system, and found a way. The crowd was unbelievable tonight."
Carolina head coach Rod Brind'Amour acknowledged his team's slow start but remained confident heading into Game 2. "We left some opportunities out there. We'll make adjustments and come back ready," he said.
Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals is scheduled for Thursday night, again at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with puck drop set for 8 p.m. ET.
