To the Editor,The frequent, severe flooding that paralyzes Hallandale Beach during heavy rains is no longer just an occasional inconvenience; it is a systemic crisis that threatens our property values, local businesses, and daily safety. As a resident, I am tired of watching our streets turn into impassable rivers after routine storms. It is time for the city to move beyond temporary fixes and implement a comprehensive, modern infrastructure strategy.First, Hallandale Beach must prioritize upgrading our aging stormwater drainage systems. Many of our catch basins and underground pipes are outdated and simply cannot handle the volume of water brought by modern tropical downpours. The city needs to aggressively invest in high-capacity stormwater pumps, larger drainage mains, and backflow preventers to ensure that high tides do not reverse into our neighborhoods.Second, we must embrace sustainable urban planning by investing in green infrastructure. Replacing impervious concrete with permeable pavements, expanding neighborhood rain gardens, and creating dedicated retention areas will allow the ground to naturally absorb water instead of overwhelming our streets. Furthermore, strict enforcement of smart building codes must ensure that new commercial and residential developments account for their own runoff without displacing water onto surrounding properties.Finally, proactive maintenance cannot be an afterthought. The city must establish a more rigorous schedule for clearing debris from storm drains and dredging local canals before the rainy season peaks. Regular maintenance ensures that the infrastructure we already have operates at maximum efficiency when we need it most.Our city leaders frequently speak about resilience and future-proofing Hallandale Beach. It is time to match that rhetoric with aggressive funding and rapid execution. We cannot afford to wait for the next major storm to take action.
