President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are set to launch their 2027 re-election campaign in Kaduna State on Saturday, October 24, as the ruling party seeks to strengthen its support across northern Nigeria.

The North accounts for approximately 56.01 million of Nigeria’s 103.43 million registered voters, making the region a major battleground in the contest for the presidency.

According to a report by The PUNCH, 31 state governors and other APC leaders are expected to attend the campaign flag-off as the party begins an intensive effort to secure a second term for Tinubu.

APC Targets 40 Million Votes

The ruling party has set an ambitious target of mobilising nearly 40 million votes for Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima in the 2027 presidential election.

Dr Betta Edu, co-chair of the APC Presidential Campaign Council’s Directorate of Women Mobilisation, said the party intends to strengthen its grassroots structures by engaging women in markets, communities and households.

Edu argued that the administration had passed through the most difficult phase of its economic reforms and was approaching a period of prosperity.

She urged party supporters to focus on direct engagement with voters and explain the administration’s policies and achievements.

The proposed 40 million-vote target remains an APC campaign objective, not a confirmed electoral outcome.

Why Kaduna Matters

The choice of Kaduna for the campaign launch is significant because of the North’s large voting population and the state’s political importance.

Tinubu lost Kaduna State in the 2023 presidential election, making the ruling party’s efforts to strengthen its position there particularly important ahead of the next general election.

The Kaduna APC has reportedly set a target of securing two million votes for Tinubu in 2027.

State officials have also intensified preparations for the rally, including venue inspections and security planning. Kaduna Deputy Governor Hadiza Balarabe, who chairs the local organising committee, said preparations were progressing ahead of the presidential visit.

APC Expresses Confidence in Tinubu’s Re-election

APC leaders have expressed confidence that the President can secure another term, arguing that the administration’s reforms and political alliances will feature prominently in the campaign.

Farouk Aliyu, a senior party figure involved in campaign organisation, acknowledged that the contest would be challenging but maintained that the party would campaign across the North and other parts of the country.

The APC intends to persuade voters by presenting its record in office and explaining the purpose of its economic reforms.

However, the party’s confidence will ultimately be tested at the ballot box.

Opposition Points to Economic Hardship and Insecurity

Opposition figures have challenged the ruling party’s optimism, arguing that the cost of living, economic hardship and persistent insecurity could influence voters’ decisions.

The camp of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who is associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has rejected the suggestion that the APC can rely on northern support to secure victory.

The opposition maintains that voters across regional and religious lines are concerned about economic conditions and the government’s performance.

The competing positions highlight a central question ahead of 2027: whether the APC can persuade voters that its reforms will deliver sufficient benefits to justify another four years in office.

A Major Electoral Test Ahead

With more than half of Nigeria’s registered voters located in the North, the region will be central to the strategies of the APC and opposition parties.

The Kaduna rally marks the beginning of an extensive campaign effort, but attendance at political gatherings and party mobilisation targets will not necessarily translate into votes.

The final outcome will depend on voter preferences, candidates’ appeal, campaign organisation and the broader political and economic climate as the election approaches.

For Tinubu and the APC, the challenge is not simply to mobilise supporters but to convince Nigerians that the administration deserves a second term.
