A proposed data center in Niles is drawing growing opposition from local residents, setting up a debate over economic development and environmental impact.

Bitdeer, a Singapore-based company, is seeking to build a data center at 1047 Belmont Ave near the city’s industrial park. Supporters of the project point to potential job creation and economic growth, while opponents have raised concerns about environmental effects and long-term community impact.

In response, residents have begun organizing efforts to push for greater public input. Some are calling on Niles City Council to place the project on the ballot, allowing voters to decide its future.

The issue is expected to be a focal point at the upcoming City Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Niles Senior Citizen Center.

Community organizing is already underway. Ohio Residents for Responsible Development has announced a petition-signing event for Trumbull County residents on Saturday, April 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Cadence Coffee House and Creperie.

As debate continues, the proposal highlights a familiar tension for growing communities: how to balance economic opportunity with environmental and quality-of-life concerns.
