JetBlue Airways selects Fort Lauderdale for the new Airbus A220
JetBlue Airways is set to designate Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport as an official Airbus A220 pilot base starting January 1, 2027 — a strategic move that signals the airline's deepening commitment to South Florida as a core operational hub.
The decision follows JetBlue's aggressive push into the Fort Lauderdale market in the wake of Spirit Airlines' collapse, which left a significant gap in low-cost capacity at one of South Florida's busiest and most competitive airports. JetBlue has moved swiftly to fill that void, trimming underperforming routes in other markets while ramping up flights out of Fort Lauderdale, where the carrier has reportedly captured a commanding share of airport capacity.

By establishing a dedicated A220 crew base, JetBlue gains greater operational flexibility to deploy its narrowbody jets on shorter and mid-range routes — missions that don't always justify the larger Airbus A320 or A321 aircraft in its fleet. The A220, known for its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort on thinner routes, has become a key part of JetBlue's network strategy.
The airline's fleet commitment is substantial: according to its most recent investor materials, JetBlue was operating 61 Airbus A220s as of March 31, 2026, with additional deliveries on the books through the end of the decade.
The new Fort Lauderdale base marks a meaningful shift in how JetBlue views the market — no longer just a high-growth opportunity, but a foundational anchor in its broader effort to restore profitability by leaning into strong leisure travel demand and Florida's outsized role in the national aviation landscape.
